It was very exciting that, on the day of the suns return (one day early due to the leap year),

its rays reached the dial. We had 20 minutes in which to make the final alignment before it disappeared again.

As you can see from this photo, early in the season when the sun is very low in the sky, the war memorial shadow

casts a shadow on the dial but only interferes with the reading for about five minutes.
